The bug is in the MTCPB2 stack. Microsoft knows about it (they write about it
in one of the readme files). I think you'll have to wait for the next TCP/IP
stack of Microsoft, use another stack or WMOS2A2

Subject: arp timeout with trumpet winsock?
I get arp timeouts when using trumpet winsock.
This happens if I try to connect to machines on
the same segment of the ethernet. When I connect
to machines on other segments via a repeater,
everything goes ok. (when using NCSA telbin etc
all goes well....)
Is there a way to change the arp time out value?
I am using a SMC ethernet card, smc_wd.com as
packet driver, and winpkt and winsock of Trumpet.

>
>I have a 14.4K baud modem and wonder what is the maximum speed I can use

There are two speeds involved with a modem link, the actual line rate
and the serial port rate.
The fastest line rate is 14.4Kb for a v.32bis modem. These modems will
always connect at that speed UNLESS you do something special such as
setting an internal register to force a different speed.
As Chris said, the fastest port rate is 57600. Some modems/programs
report the line speed and others the port speed when they connect. A
modem setting, probably another internal register, will tell you both
speeds. The 57600 speed is theoretically possible if your modem and the
host modem both support v.42bis compression. If they do, some data can
be compressed by a factor of 4 hence the 57600 number (4*14400). The
data have to be very special, obviously, to allow that kind of
compression. Nevertheless it's quite common to see actual transfer
rates much better than the 14.4 line rate for ASCII files. PROVIDED
your machine has a 16550A UART, also as Chris mentioned. The utility
program MSD (Microsoft Diagnostics, comes with Windows) will tell you
what kind of UART you have if you don't know. As a general rule of
thumb IBM PS/2 computers have a 16550A UART and clones don't. Reasons
had to do with clones following the PC/AT architecture (ISA) as well as
cost. Other manufacturers (Gateway, e.g.) are now putting 16550A parts
on their machines as well so that problem will eventually disappear.

Subject: HELP: need assistance w/ Trumpet SLIP setup
Okay, I'm giving in. I need assistance, and I hope it won't be too
tough.
Setup:
local (home): 486dx2/66, 8Mb, 16450 (??) UART. 14400/V.42bis modem.
running Linux 1.0.8 (Slackware 1.2.0) // Windows 3.1
SLIP s/ware is either dip-3.3.7-uri, or Peter Tattam's
Trumpet Winsock 1.0a
remote (work): Sun Sparc 2 to a 3Com comms server (terminal server).
14400/V.42bis modem on the comm server.
SunOS 4.1.3, cslip-2.7
Okay, that ought to cover *that* side.
Background:
I set up two Sparcs the same way -- cslip-2.7 under SunOS 4.1.3. One of
them I attached a modem (same type as the home one) to, and dialled our
terminal server (to give myself a real dial-up link). Logged in, SLIP
started, and all was well. I could telnet/ping/ftp... you name it, IP
was working over that connection.
Aha! I thought. This is easy.
Went home. Tried a similar procedure with Trumpet Winsock. Not a sausage.
I checked that my MTU was set properly (552 at both ends), that I either
was or wasn't using Van Jacobsen compression (yes, I tried it with both),
that my RWIN was set appropriately (2048), and that the MSS was okay (512).
Still nothing. Trumpet also bombs out sometimes when I hit 'ESC' to
start up the SLIP connection.
I turned on all the messages, and got "IP header checksum" errors for
everything that looked like an incoming packet.
So I tried it with dip under Linux. Still nothing. MTU = 552. I can
ping, and I see TX packets, but there's no response apart from an
occasional "burst" of solid TX from the remote end.
Questions:
* I'm a bit hazy on the PC hardware side. Is it possible that my UART isn't
"beefy" enough? (I find this hard to believe -- I'm typing this via a
"term" connection under Linux while I upload some stuff at the same time.
All at 19200 DTE speed).
* Is there an absolute minimum configuration which is pretty much
"guaranteed" to work? (I'm not expecting miracles or promises of
eternal salvation here). Something like "oh, if you run it at 2400 it always
goes" would even be okay.
* Is PPP going to be easier/simpler to set up? Is there even a PPP
winsock client? Does the fridge light really go out when you close the
door?
Any help will be greeted with Gratitude. I promise to summarise
useful mail that I might recieve.

Subject: Why does TCPman start when Trumpet News is running
I recently moved to Cham Sampler from Trumpet Winsock (on SLIP) and Trumpet
runs after I login and start my news reader (Trumpet). I have not used the
package but kept it on the disk anyway.
I do not load any Trumpet Winsock executables or dll's at any point but TCPMAN
starts any time I start any Winsock app except the Cham Mail or Telnet or other
utils

Cica is mirrored on src.doc.ic.ac.uk:/packages/ibmpc/win3, which will
probably be closer and faster for you.
And remember to set Mode Binary before you FTP it.

I would guess that your Mac is reporting the DTE speed, the speed of the
link between Mac and Modem, whereas the PC software is reporting the DCE
speed i.e. that between the two modems. The latter can never be higher
than 14400bps (not baud) for a V32bis modem. The former will depend on
how you configure your software and modem. To achieve reliable DTE
speeds greater than 19200 on a PC you will almost certainly need a
serial port with a 16550 comms chip rather than the more common 8250 or
16450. Microsoft's msd.exe which comes with Windows 3.1x will tell you
what you currently have.

Ditto. I tried versions 0.91.1, 0.91.2, and 0.91.3 and none of them would post.
As soon as I went back to 0.90.6 it posted right away. If any of the other
versions posted, it did so and then wouldn't quit talking to the server. I
had to exit WinVN totally to get it to stop trying to send.
One thing I noticed is that when I ran the newer versions, an icon showed up
at the bottom of my screen with a "Winsock" label. Is this something new
to the newer versions? I thought it might be something new to my latest
update to Chameleon (4.00.7), but it only appears with the 0.91 versions of
WinVN.
For the time being, I'm staying with 0.90.6 to send my posts.

Subject: Help! Mywinsock won't talk to my proxy server!
Help!
Does anybody know of a Winsock that will talk through a proxy server.
I live on the wrong side of a firewall and normal telnet and ftp won't
work.
I'm trying to use Mosiac and, whilst I can use the bulk of the services, ftp
and telnet just time out. I'm using Trumpet TCP which almost connects if I
set up the proxy lines in Mosaic.ini, but not quite.
Any information, of the location of a suitable winsock gratefully received.
Sorry no imagination - No catchy sig!

In my case, these are definitely not the problems. There was just some change in
the 0.91.x versions of WinVN that's not compatible with my (and apparently others')
setup. As soon as I switched back to 0.90.6, the problem went away and I can now
happily post again.
But I will say that the 0.91 versions were lightning fast at reading in the
newsgroups! Took less than half the time of 0.90 versions!

Subject: Winsock with SLIP/PPP
I've read the install file for Winsock and have seen other
instructions as well for using it with SLIP connections, but I've
never seen mention of it with PPP. I really don't even no the
differences/benefits/cons of the two, but I'm looking for a service
provider at the moment. Most have SLIP or dialup shells, but one I've
seen has PPP only. If winsock doesn't work with PPP, what does?

Subject: Winsock mail reader for Win 3.1
I got the basic Chameleon package because I needed PPP access.
However the Chameleon newsreader is truely lame and I have
started using Trumpet which is vastly better for a PPP 14.4k
link. Now I'm looking at the mail reader. The Chameleon mailer
is not as lame as the newsreader, but it is still poor (no aliases,
can only handle small incoming messages--it just uses the
basic edit control). Is there any way to get the Win for WG mail
program or other commercial/shareware program which is
better to work with winsock? Thanks for any help!

Subject: WinQVT/Net - nasty error!
I'm using WinQVT/Net v3.97 for reading News.
Sometimes a 'nasty' error occurs.
I open a News session and reads a News group.
Usually I don't read all the postings, but finishes by pressing Ctrl+End - Purge Newsgroup.
This normally works, and I'm back in the Newsgroup listing.
Unfortunately, sometimes Windows reports an error at a blue screen
- as if an application 'hangs', and you press Ctrl+Alt+Del to terminate it.
I have the choice of pressing Enter to terminate the program or Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot.
But Enter doesn't work, I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del!
It seems to happend if I start WinQVT/Net after running Windows for a couple of hours.
Anyone else experienced this?
